This article was written in 2005/2006 and it appeared in Russian in Drevnosti Bospora 10, 2006, pp. 429-462. The current version was translated into English and sent to the editor in spring 2007 and was not updated, therefore, the publications which appeared later are not considered. The article presents the silver gilt phalerae found in the course of earthworks in the area of Kuban stanitza Uspenskaya in 1866 and now kept in the State Museum of Georgia.The central part of two large phalerae is decorated with rosettes framed with garland, the sloping middle part — with curly rosettes, the edge bent out wards — with guilloche pattern. The small phalera bears a bull protome with small curly rosettes on the forehead and on the shoulder.The compositional and stylistic analysis of the large phalerae causes doubts in M. Pfrommer’s attribution considering the Uspenskaya phalerae to have been later specimens (2nd century BC) made after some earlier prototypes. Their most probable date may be restricted to the period of the last quarter of the 3rd — first quarter of the 2nd century BC.

This article aims to publish unique specimens of Hellenistic toreutics – a pair of silver phalerae decorated with gilding and forming part of an horses’ harness, which was found during excavation of the Volodarka-I Burial-ground on the west bank of the River Ural in western Kazakhstan in 1981. A detailed analysis is provided of the subject depicted on the phalerae – fighting between Bellerophon seated on the winged horse Pegasos and the monster Chimaira, of the iconography of the figures, of the details and decorative elements of the depictions and the techniques used. The phalerae from Volodarka are compared with other phalerae, similar with regard to their construction and the composition of the depictions, which were found in the lower reaches of the Volga (Novouzensk), on the bank of the River Ishim and on the east bank of the Irtysh (Sidorovka), and also with phalerae of unknown origin bearing depictions of elephants from the Hermitage collection. This volume continues the publication of Greek painted pottery in the State Hermitage museum. This book is the first fascicule devoted to Attic red-figure pelikai of the 4th century BC. It catalogues 40 vessels, mostly from the archaeological excavations of the Panticapaeum necropolis, undertaken in the 19th – early 20th centuries. In addition to the well-known masterpieces, the book also describes the pelikai known from short mentions and brief descriptions. zanlak municipality (probably from destroyed burial mound). The item is clearly of local manufacture and most fascinating – it is made from copper alloy. Although heavily damaged, from 1 to 7 equal ornaments from three different types are preserved, positioned in horizontal rows. They are all embossed, worked in repoussé technique using a stamp, outlined, and several details are added with free hand afterwards. On the lowest row there is a single image of fish and just above it there are seven birds, probably ducks. Most interesting are the partly preserved bull heads, ornaments known from many metalworking tools, especially in Northwestern Bulgaria, but attested on much fewer Thracian metal vases. This study aims to propose a clear date for the pitcher and determine its role in Hellenistic Thrace. With the archaeological context lost, a formal-typological analysis is conducted, which points to a date in the late 4th or the first half of 3rd c. BC. With the closest geographical and chronological parallel being with another chance find – a silver pectoral from somewhere in Stara Zagora region, a question stands for the localization of workshop or group of closely related workshops (using similar tools), working on different types of items and materials, but with similar decoration. This atelier is probably located in Seuthopolis or in its vicinity, where, during the political upsurge during the Early Hellenistic period, probably a local bronze workshop for vases was in operation.

The gold pectoral from Tovsta Mohyla is a masterpiece of Greco-Scythian metalwork, the most prominent and esteemed of all the finds uncovered in 260 years of excavating the Scythian kurgans. After the pectoral was discovered on 21 June 1971 by B. Mozolevsky, dozens of other scientists joined him in studying it. The researchers have raised a wide range of interesting questions revolving around the origin of the pectoral, the technology involved in its production, its stylistic features, and the interpretation of its depictions. However, so far, none of these questions has been answered definitively. This article provides an overview of the author's recent interdisciplinary research on the Tovsta Mohyla pectoral.
